Bob Rapoza was elected national president of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States on Sept. 15, 2009, during the NAPUS National Convention in Anchorage, AK. The first NAPUS national president elected from outside the continental U.S., he assumed office on Jan. 1, 2010.

In his acceptance remarks, Rapoza said NAPUS will diligently work to represent the interests of Postmasters in dealings with the Postal Service and Congress. “NAPUS will be vocal, visible and a force for change,” he pledged. “We will do the right thing for our members, our employer and the American people.”

Rapoza, who served as NAPUS national secretary-treasurer in 2005 and 2006, is Postmaster of Honokaa, HI. His 43-year postal career began as a city letter carrier in 1966, a position in which he served 10 years. He was an active member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, where he was elected or appointed to positions at local and state levels.

Rapoza’s postal management career began as superintendent of Postal Operations. He later was selected to serve as Postmaster in Level-18 and -22 offices and as acting manager, Postal Operations, in the Honolulu District.

The NAPUS Hawaii Chapter president for six years, Rapoza also served two separate terms as NAPUS national vice president for Area 22 (representing HI, NV and CA). He was an active member of the NAPUS Executive Board for seven years and a Postmaster representative for 14. Seven NAPUS national presidents appointed Rapoza as chair or a member of various national committees.

Rapoza, a Vietnam veteran, attended the University of Hawaii. His wife Sharon was a postal employee for 40 years, a Postmaster for 28 years and Hawaii Chapter president for six years before her recent retirement from the Postal Service.

The Rapozas, both born in Hawaii, have relocated from the Big Island of Hawaii to their current residence in Alexandria, VA.
